Although the nature of blogging itself is new, blogging is truly a recession-proof business.

Why?

Well, during recession, people tend to buy stuff less, or at least buy them cheaper. (which makes them search online more and also click on more ads.)

Plus, more retailers start advertising more online, simply because it’s cheaper and more efficient advertising model.

How can this make your blog make more money?

Well, for one, if you have Adsense ads on your blog, you will benefit greatly from those traditional retailers bidding on your Adsense ads.

Hopefully, blogging will always be a recession-proof business.  It’s a minimal investment compared to any other businesses out there, your overhead is minimal too since all you need is content and money to pay for your servers.

Of course, not everyone who blogs will make money online.  There’s unwritten rules and know-how you will simply have to learn through trial-and-error.  THAT is probably the real secret and NO ONE is out there to tell you exactly how to do that.  (Yes, you can buy that $400 E-book on how to be a millionaire but e-books get old fast, information moves so fast, you need to actually be on top of it through experience, not just books.)

All I can tell you right now is that this is probably the best time to start a blog.  Invest that $3000 for the next whole year on a new blog, just to test the waters.

Although I could have written an E-book from scratch, I made this E-book in about 30 minutes using scraps of blog posts on this very blog.

Well, to do this, you need a little bit of hacking but it’s simply as I will outline it for you.

First, you will need to create an XML file that FeedFlare needs to recognize.

I create an XML file like this:

(UPDATE: If you have hard time seeing the code, try opening up http://zedomax.com/diy/diy.xml and right-click->View Page Source)

Now simply copy and paste above code and save it as “sample.xml” or whatever you want to name it with .xml extension.  Of course, you might want to change the wording to whatever you need.  (Change the Title, Description, Text, and Link href.)

Then upload this file onto your website.  (I uploaded to http://zedomax.com/diy/diy.xml, you can click to see)

Second, go to FeedFlare, which is under the Menu->Optimze->FeedFlare in your Feedburner dashboard.

Simply past in your xml http address.  For me, I simply plugged in the http://zedomax.com/diy/diy.xml address like this:

Once you do that, you should see the following:

Make sure that the checkmark is checked and you are pretty much done.

When reader subscribe via E-mail, they will see something like this:

(NOTE: It might take couple minutes or a new post before this change appears on your feed.  If you don’t see it, try writing a test blog post.)

and the link will of course lead to the Link href I set in the beginning of this blog post. (http://zedomax.com/diy/diyebook.pdf)

Of course, this is a very “crude” method of actually knowing how many people downloaded your E-book.

Next time, I will show you how to add statistics to track how many people are downloading your PDF E-book.  (And I will show you how to do this without paying for any statistics services)

I know how to do it, just haven’t implemented it yet.

Although there’s not much traffic and subscribers yet on this blog, I will be soon making another E-book from the content on this blog to try the method.

Within just 1 day, Zedomax.com hit the highest RSS subscription of 1286, 74 more than ever, which was 1212 subscribers on October 7th.

I will have a full DIY How-To post on how to do this with Feedburner (hopefully tomorrow as I got about 3 major projects for clients, my computer is asking for a vacation right now).

Well, in short, the short term results look real good, I even added a sidebar “ad” to make sure new visitors to Zedomax.com will see the free DIY E-book too.

That’s all for today but my advice is to look for any old content in your blog, harddisk, wherever, you may not need to write an E-book from scratch, just put it together.

How did I do it?

Well, I had about 29+ original content DIY blog posts (hiding somewhere in my blog).  I simply opened up my Word, copy and pasted those blog articles, then converted to PDF via Adobe Acrobat with interactive bookmarks and hyperlinks so people can also click an image to see the larger version online.

That’s right!  You don’t need to write a new E-book from scratch, you may already have tons of content right there on your blog.  You simply need to organize it, add Table of Contents, Intro, etc…etc…

Why did I make an E-book?

A lot of bloggers have been reaping tons of more new readers and benefits, simply by offering a free E-book in return for subscribing to the blog via E-mail.

John Chow also has a great article, I can’t find the original article but here’s something close to it.

I’ve seen bloggers go from zero to like 8,000 RSS subscribers in couple months using this method.

If you have a lot of original content you can stich up into an E-book, it can be very valuable for the readers since they don’t have to be online via internet to read your book.

On top of it, the E-book can spread virally like a wildfire if people do like it.

One more thing, with addition of new E-book reader such as the Amazon Kindle, E-books can also now be downloaded in many forms to even PDAs, cellphones, etc…etc…

Well, since is my very first E-book, I don’t know how the results are going to be but I am already now working on an E-book for this blog, so watch out for that.

I will also have a HOW-TO article on how to get your Feedburner to show the E-book download link next.  You will need that gimick in order for the E-book marketing to work effectively while gaining more RSS readers.
