Well, one of the comments I got was from Joshua on my other blog post on how to make money with blogging:

I agree with the importance of blogging, but what if you’re an artist and would like to combine a portfolio with a blog, some insight would be helpful! I welcome any critique!

I am not a professional artist nor photographer by any means but I have seen a lot of techniques other artist-type bloggers have been using.

For Photography, I do see a high number of successful bloggers who promote through high-resolution photos that are copyrighted.  I don’t think they would be trying to make money with Adsense due to the nature of content, which are “photos”.  But you can make money indirectly through other graphic designers and alike who want to use your photos in their website/company brochure/etc…etc…

One thing I can tell you about photography is that you can easily promote it using StumbleUpon.  You can easily bring couple thousand visitors to your photos daily. (if people like it that is)  Photography is one of the easiest niches to promote on StumbleUpon, simply because StumbleUpon is built on local photographers who showcase their art on SU for free.

Now for Art, I guess you can do a similar thing like photos.  But if you are seriously trying to rack up cash, I have an idea, just make an e-store where people can order your art.  (if you have enough of them)  Then link it seamlessly with your blog/portfolio site.

The most important part I think is that you need to start with a good monetization strategy.  If you bring 100K people to your website but you have nothing to sell, that’s not a good strategy.

Yet, if you can bring just 10 people to your website but a sales-conversion ratio of 10%, that’s going to make money for sure.

Yes, for Joshua’s site, I would recommend adding an e-store. You can keep adding new art that you are willing to sell every week.  And also keep blogging of course about everything you do.

You could probably even sell the high-resolution versions as digital copies to other graphic designers online, this would be huge if you had a big database of artwork.  Then, you can keep the physical copies or simply sell them for way more.  (Make sure you have copyright notice on every photo though, you want to be protected by the law with couple more words such as “Copyright (c) 2009 Joshua”.

You can also network with other art blogs to trade blogrolls, which is highly important for your blog to get off the ground and into the main niche audience.

I also see no tagging, which is crucial for search engines to identify your art.  Since you are using Typepad, I don’t know how to add tags there but I know you can.

Well, I guess that’s about it or at least how I would go about it. , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

It's hard to say because a lot of artists are not really into making money online. From what I see…
