Be Unique, Be Weird, better yet, BE CRAZY!!!
For some reason, I am on a string of blog posts that might label myself as “crazy”. Well, it’s true, I admit it, I am a crazy person.
First, let me ask you a question, “have you ever took 2 or more parking spaces when you park your car at a public parking lot?”
Well, let me tell you that I have a “good” habit of taking at least 2 parking spaces whenever I can. Is that something crazy people do? Probably yes.
I honestly enjoy the amount of “power” I feel when I park my SUV over 3 parking spaces diagonally, it’s just a fun thing. Plus, I have extra insurance that my car doesn’t ever get dinged by parking too close to other cars. I’ve actually had 4 hit-and-run instances at a parking lot in the last 2 years and no one left a message.
The point is, that I like to think out of the box, I don’t like to park where people have painted those white lines and tell you where you should park.
Same thing in life, you need to get out of that same, boring stable life and see what kind of opportunities exist out there.
Am I telling you to be more crazy?!?
Hell yes. I have a friend who always asks me why am I taking up 3 car spaces whenever we go out for grocery shopping together. I told him, “Why not?”
(Is there any rules that say you have to park within the white lines? I don’t think so, it’s not even ILLEGAL! What makes it illegal are the lines and your brain.)
After couple times I did that, I told him how “nice” he was.
Well, the good thing is that my friend learned, he promptly entered the grocery store shortly afterwards, drank couple bottle of coffee, threw them way in the air, and left without paying.
I can also tell you that I NEVER abide by the speed limit and most people don’t in San Francisco anyways. Those signs are useless for people like me who don’t care for rules, laws, and whatever. Rules and laws were made by humans just like you and me. They were made to be broken.
In my dictionary, “there are no rules”.
In business, “there are no rules”, you can keep negotiating until you get what you want.
If you don’t believe me, look at any country’s history and count how many laws were made by humans and how many revolutions broke them. America is such a country too as you well know.
My advice for the day, “try something crazy, you can break the law, just don’t get caught doing it.”
(BUT DON’T SHOW UP ON LIVE TV WITH CHP CHASING YOUR CAR, I WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT! USE COMMON SENSE!)
Here’s a couple exercises I actually do every once in awhile to stay “fresh” and out of the box:
- Sneak into a really high 60-story skyscaper in your city and go to the roof where they have the helicopter pad and sit on the edge while viewing the city. You will feel what I mean by, “being on the edge”.
- Go to a rave, go dance and listen to music with the younger kids. My lawyer friend I do this once a year, our favorite rave is the Love Fest, an outdoor rave in San Francisco celebrating love.
- Go skydiving – This is actually something I haven’t done but it’s on my priority list.
- Go surfing – Surfing in SF Bay Area/Monterey can be very exhilarating, you never know when a white shark will grab your legs.
Of course, finally but not least, make sure to take up at least 2 parking spaces next time you park at a public parking lot.
I am sure you can think of other fun, crazy things you can do to get out of the box.
This is a mental exercise that can help you think out of the box btw, I am not simply rambling here…
Here’s John Chow throwing a cookie at AdTech last year (4:04), that’s thinking out of the box:
