There’s a lot of posts on the net about how you should stay “neutral” to world news and topics.

Well, I am hear to tell you that you should never stay “neutral”, even if that means pissing off your readers.

I’ve probably lost half of my subscribers on Zedomax.com during elections but that doesn’t stop me from saying what I think is in my mind.

I’d probably rather die than be “stopped” from saying what I want. Of course, you might not always be right but at least you got your point across.

Why?

A blog is about freedom of speech. Whether you can say something neutral or not, you are always right.

In that regard, if you are going to be “neutral”, you might as well not even be blogging.

Of course, there’s some extent to “professionalism” but the bloggers people follow are bloggers with opinions, not “ghost” and “empty” blogs with no feelings.

CNN might be “neutral” but you don’t have to be.

BBC might be “neutral” but you don’t have to be.

Starting a debate about something can also ignite your web traffic.

As an example, I can tell you that one of my blog posts about a medical gadget that would improve the circumcision process received a LOT of comments and traffic.

My post about how to deal with racist jokes ranks on the first page of Google for “racist jokes”.

Those are just two little examples WHY you need to be opinionated. (Now, remember I didn’t say “biased”, just opinionated.)

Being opionionated also doesn’t mean you have to be snarky, it simply means you can state the facts with your opinions in a civil, orderly manner.

Now, your homework for the day. Go find the most controversial topic for your niche and write a blog post about it with your opinion added.

That might be the simplest way you can “contribute” to the world’s knowledge while receiving more web traffic in return.

Google Adwords Secret for $5!

Stats for Webmasters - Stattt.com Launched

Well, it’s been one helluva New Years for me as I launched THREE new sites in just a period of a week or so, and HAPPY NEW YEARS everyone.

I don’t know why but near the New Years, I tend to get more creative and have to make websites for fun.

Without delay, let me show you Stattt.com, a stats search engine that will aggregate data from multiple sources including Alexa, Compete, and Quantcast.

There’s a similar site on the web already called Statsaholic and AttentionMeter, but Stattt.com is slightly different in that we have our own Stattt Ranking, based on a small algorithm that calculates your web ranking. Also, you can do keyword searches with Blog results, that part I am still working on so…

This site is basically tailor-made for me since I am a webmaster and I need to check stats for my 20+ websites daily. And of course, it’s free so you can use it too.

How to Plan Out your Web Business for New Years 2009 Resolution!

For the year 2009, I plan to do a lot of planning and of course, more planning.

Whether you are running a blog, e-store, or any other website, you will have realized how “long-term” goals and planning affect your web business more than anything else.

More importantly, these long-term plans will ultimately make you money in the long run or put you in a financial hardship.

So how to go about it?

1. Analyze your web traffic stats, sales-to-conversion ratios, advertising, and all the stats you will need to plan for the year ahead.

For example, last year, my blog network daily average was around 6,000 pageviews per day. Since then, I have made about 6-8 new websites and brought up the daily pageviews to about 24,000 pageviews per day.

That’s about 400% growth in web traffic in the course of the year.

Of course, this didn’t come as plain luck, I “planned” it, using efficient strategies to create new content/blogs, and in return, collect the goals, or increase in web traffic.

2. After analysis, do something about it.

One of the most important things in any kind of web business is that you “do something about it”.

If you are selling wallets online and your sales are down, try something new. If you have been using AdWords to advertise, try an affiliate program such as CJ or you could even get an affiliate software for a hundred bucks.

If you blog stats are down, try targetting different topics such as “New Years” or maybe even hire a blogger so you have a good balance of personalities on your blog. (I really think that having multiple bloggers helps as you get different viewpoints, writing styles, and more readers in the long run.)

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the month of January through March.

If you can get some good results during that trial-and-analysis period, put your web business on automatic pilot for the rest of the year and enjoy your profits. That’s what it’s about, you need to setup the skeleton that works and let the skeleton work itself.

Web business is about continuous analysis and changes you make during the first few months of incubation, whether that’s the New Year or you have just launched a new site.

As for another example, I launched SiteHoppin.com on January 1st 2008. It’s been a year and web traffic has been steady around 5000 pageviews per day. My next goal? Of course, it’s going to be around 50,000 pageviews by December 2009.

I hope you take year 2009 with a new, clear outlook on how you will “plan” the months ahead. Without plans, you are as good as a sailor lost in the deep, blue ocean.

How to Make Money During New Years Holiday!

Well, today is the day after Christmas and if you haven’t made money during Christmas, you should at least make some effort to make money during New Years holiday. (On the side note, I did make a couple easy hundred bucks during Black Friday)

First, take a look at Google Trends and see how many “more” people will be searching for something related with New Years.

Now, as you can see, you simply need to write about New Years because there will be about 50-100 times more search traffic for the term “New Years” and anything related.

For example, if you have a blog about gadgets, you could write a blog post about “Top 10 New Years Resolution Gadgets” or even “Investing during New Years” if you have a financial blog.

As for affiliate marketing, you can “target” New Years sales items.

The list goes on and on and can be endless but I just gave you the idea how.

Also, don’t forget, a lot of people will include “losing weight”, “making more money”, and other similar goals as their New Years resolution, that’s a LOT of extra traffic you NEED to pick up.

Of course, you can just sit there and watch your web traffic fall too but don’t be lazy now. You need to make money when everyone else is sleeping and rest when everyone else is working.

I’ve been messing with some open source search engine software last couple days and I have to say, I am very tired and no more programming until next year!

Christmas Adsense Update, Less People Searching?

As an internet marketer who relies on search and Adsense campaigns to make a living online, you need to check Google’s traffic often to see what’s going on.

For Christmas, Google’s traffic and overall world search traffic tends to dip a little as most people are celebrating the birth of Chirst, or Christmas.

So, if your Adsense earning have been down last couple days or so, I am here to tell you not to worry.

Here’s a quick look at the overall Google traffic in the last year or so:

As you can see, the overall traffic dips considerably during the end of the year but will surge back up in the middle of January.

Here’s a close-up of what’s happening in the search world last couple days:

As you can see, if the overall Google traffic is down, your earning will likely to be down too.

On the other hand, if your blog/website is Christmas-oriented, you might expect a “surge”.

Well, I hope that helps and if you’ve been worrying about your Adsense earnings, don’t worry and go to that Christmas party with your friends and family.

What Is “Search”?

Okay, here’s chapter 2 of my new book, “Search”, right here on this blog.

Today’s topic is, “What is Search?”

Now, people just normally think of “search” as something they want and that’s exactly what it is, “What you REALLY want”.

I am sure a lot of you have gone to Home Depot to look for that small hardware part for your home.

Let’s say you go to Home Depot and look for that special pipe adaptor for your kitchen plumbing.

You get to Home Depot and since your are a “Do-It-Yourselfer”-type, you decide to look for it in the plumbing section. After looking through every small pipe in the plumbing department for half an hour, you finally decide to ask one of Home Depot workers where you can find that certain pipe adaptor for your kitchen.

The worker replies, “Oh, that’s right there by your foot.”

Think of how much time you could have saved if you asked one of those workers as soon as you stepped into Home Depot.

In comparison, a search engine is nothing but a Home Depot employee who knows where everything is.

You, on the other hand, is of course the “searcher”.

THAT is “search” and WHAT it does for people and WHY people use it a LOT.

Now, think of internet marketing. Do you think focusing on “search” will make you more money?

Hell yes, whether you run an e-store, blog, or any other website, letting people “search” on your site is like having one of your employees being there to help your users find what they “want”.

How do I apply this?

Do you see the big search bar on this blog? It’s not there just for fun, it’s there to “help” people find what they want if they want to save time or simply can’t find what they want by browsing.

I am sure you can find a way to apply this “search” focused theme to your website.

What Is “Search”?

G.I.M 101 - Get Vertical!

Well, the other day, I made the world’s very first, ever vertical search engine called, AhZing. It took me about 2 hours of javascript coding as our current browsers don’t support vertical typing. (This idea might work wonders in countries like Korea, Japan, and China where written language has originally been written top to bottom, right to left. It wasn’t until Westerner influence that those Asian languages became left-to-right and top-to-bottom. In Korea, where I was born, they have original artifacts of Korean written language written top to bottom. )

I didn’t really make this site for profit but as a showcase site for my new book called, “Search”, which I am in the process of writing explaining why “search” is important in today’s world and why it’s “everything”.

Today’s GIM lesson is, “GET VERTICAL!”

What does that mean?

Well, whatever you are doing whether that’s running an e-store, blogging, etc…etc…, I want you to take your website and turn it sideways. (Get vertical)

Why?

Sometimes, you really need to take your whole web business and turn it 90 degrees counter-clockwise and that might just make your mediocre business into a successful one.

I can testify to this as I have gotten “vertical” many times during my experiences as an internet marketer. If I didn’t, I’d be working for some Joe Schmoe at the local BigFatCompany.

Okay, but don’t take this literally, I just wanted to get the point across. The important thing you should take from this blog post is to try bunch of new ideas whether that’s putting a big banner on top of your content, drastically taking out all outgoing links on your homepage, or whatever.

If you are in web business, you NEED to get vertical, try radically different approaches and see which ones work and which ones don’t. Besides, it’s cool to get vertical.

If you don’t believe me, check out all these wiki sites I made that didn’t make a dime. (At the time, I thought these were an incredible business models, boy was I wrong! Those failures really allowed me to try even more radical ones.)

Now I’ve realized that it’s not really putting all your heart into one website in order to be successful.

In order to build a successful web site, you need to experience different types of internet marketing by creating a whole slew of them. If you aren’t making new sites every week, you are probably not going to succeed and better off finding a job at a big corporation.

Over the years, I’ve become expert in not just blogging, I’ve also become a code-expert on PHP, CSS, Wikis, Java, AJAX, Javascript, and Photoshop to just name a few.

It’s the process of “never ending creations” that will make you money online and keep you growing.

If your blog isn’t making money after 6 months, it’s probably time for you to get a different career or make a new blog.

Then again, there are people who make blogs for hobby and diary, that’s good, I am only referring to those who “want to make a living online”.

I’ve created and killed about 100 websites within the last 2 years. Some of them make money, some of them are simply so bad and they must be “killed”.

Eventually, you will come up with a great site, if you need inspiration, just look at Thomas Edison.

G.I.M 101 - Get Vertical!

NetKlix Needs Better Ads…

As I promised, I did try out NetKlix but with some huge disappointments.

My average CTR was only 0.109%, probably worst than any of my Google Adsense ads.

I think the problem lies in their ad serving engine, it doesn’t display relevant ads. (the categories I picked were in tech sector yet I see bunch of unrelated “make money online” ads displaying)

And also be aware, NetKlix doesn’t pay you until your ad is approved. I gave them about 10K impressions the first day and since my ads weren’t approved, I didn’t get any money on the clicks for the first day.

Here’s the customer response I got:

You are correct no traffic is recorded until all Sites have been reviewed and approved.

I am kinda furious to why this isn’t stated before I put the ads up. Basically I gave them free money. It should be the other way around.

I feel this is very unfair as no one does this including Adsense, Chitika, or any fair ad program I have used.

Of course, NetKlix does have some promising future if they can correct the problems I’ve outlined here, mainly:

1. You need to pay publishers for displaying NetKlix ads from the moment they sign up or at least have a BIG NOTE to not put your ads up until they have been approved.

2. More relevant ads, NetKlix needs to cut all the “make money online” ads unless the publisher chooses that topic. (I felt the ads were more like “spam” than ads.)

For now, I will have to stop using NetKlix, I simply see no advantages of using them over hundreds of other PPC programs out there. If you really want to use them, my advice is to wait another 6 months or so until they have more advertisers. At this point, it seems the main problem is their “quality” of advertisers.

NetKlix Needs Better Ads…

G.I.M. 101 - How to Sell Private CPM-based Ads Using Google Ad Manager!

Here’s the first lesson in what I think is going to be a whole series of G.I.M. (Guerilla Internet Marketing).

A lot of small to medium sized bloggers sell private ads based on fixed, monthly rate and that’s good if you are selling them on a consistent basis but let me show you how you can sell private CPM-based ads using Google Ad Manager and make more money.

Why CPM-based private ads?

Well, as a publisher(blogger), you need to maximize income while providing a clear, definite way for advertisers to maximize their advertising money.

If you take a look at Federated Media, these guys are basically selling blog ad spaces based on CPM.

Now, clearly, you will make more money by providing advertisers CPM-based rates while the advertisers only pay for your blog’s performance or number of impressions.

The most important question is now, “How do you setup a CPM-based advertising on your blog?”

Well, it’s a good thing Google has made Google Ad Manager available just in time, FREE and many customizable options such as providing your advertisers “geo-targetted” ads, CPC/CPM, and lots more.

By “geo-targetted”, I mean that if you use Google Ad Manager, you can control which “countries” your advertiser’s ad will show up.

How cool is that?

Well, before you get too excited, let me walk you through the Google Ad Manager setup.

First, you will need to sign up for an account here.

1) Go Click on Inventory tab, and click on “New Ad Slot”.

2) Fill in your Ad slot name, determine the size of your ad, fill in the description if you want to, then hit “Save” at the bottom.

3) Once you have a new ad slot, you will need to create a new Placement. Click on “New Placement”.

4) Name your Placement, Click on “Add” for the Ad Slot you made in step 1-2, then hit “Save”.

5) You can skip Targeting for now, Click on “Ad Products” tab, then Click on “New Ad Product“.

6) Name your Ad Product, select “Premium”, select CPM, set your rate card/minimum (this is your rate per CPM or 1000 impressions), click on “Add” for your Ad Slot, then hit “Save“.

7) Now, you are pretty much ready, but you will need to place some javascript codes in your blog so your ads will show up. Go to Inventory->Ad Slots and click on “Generate Sample HTML“.

Click on “Add”.

9) Hit “Generate Sample HTML”.

Now, there’s 2 different codes, one for your HTML tag and one for where the ad actually goes.

So copy the head section code into your blog’s header file, header.php for Wordpress.

Copy the ad code at the section of your blog where you’d like it to appear.

10) Now, let’s test out our new CPM beast, go to Orders and click on “New Order“.

11) Fill out an order name, pick “Unlimited” for end date, make a test company for Advertiser, then hit “Save“.

12) Now you need to click on “New line item“.

13) Click on “Add” for your Ad Slot then hit “Save“.

14) For delivery options, you can set Delivery rate as “As fast as possible“, Creative rotation as “Even“, then hit “Save“.

Of course, you can also set “Frequency cap” if you want to limit impression per ad per user but for our testing, we will do it like this.

15) Now, check the Test Order line item and click “Appove“.

16) Once you approve an order, you will need to click on “Needs Creatives” so you can upload your sample ad.

17) Select your appropriate Ad slot size, select Creative type as “Standard image hosted“, find your sample Image File on your computer, set the Click-through URL to where you want the ad to click through, then hit “Save“.

18) Now, you need to click on “Activate this line item” so your ad will go live.

19) Now, you will have to wait about 5-10 minutes before the ad shows up on your site.

You can preview what it will look like by clicking on “Preview Creative” as shown below:

20) There, I just told you how you can setup your blog so you can sell CPM, geo-targetted ads.

More advantages explained

You will notice that now all your private ads using Google Ad Manager will be javascript so you don’t have to worry about any PageRank loss or stuff like that.

One of the things I do is take the successful blogs’ models and apply it to my blogs. In this case, you will be able to sell ads based on CPM, just like the bigger blogs using Federated Media.

Basically, you now know how to apply power of Federated Media into your blogs by using free Google Ad Manager.

How cool is that?

Now, go on ahead and setup your blogs and start advertising your CPM-based, geo-targetted ads using Google Ad Manager.

There’s still a lot of things to play with such as stats and whatnot, I will have to cover that next time.

This is the simple and clear way to maximize your private ad spaces. No more selling fixed, monthly private ad spaces, that’s simply dumb if you know how to do this.

A lot of “big” companies will look for ads based on CPM, not monthly rates, and if you have this setup, I am sure they will come to you.

4 Hour Workweek Book Review

Well, I’ve justed finished reading the 4-Hour Workweek at Borders (because my dad took the one I bought).

Anyways, this 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferriss is a great book that can teach you how to “outsource” your life and run multiple corporations from remote world-wide locations. (In other words, Timothy Ferriss is on vacation all year long traveling to destinations like Thailand while he’s business has been “automated” thoroughly by outsourcing.)

One of my dreams in life is to travel the world while running an internet business with no products to sell, inventory, or real employees who work in cubicles.

Timothy Ferriss has just done that and I do highly suggest you read his book as there’s some great stuff on internet marketing too.

Tim goes into detail about how you can setup virtual call centers, virtual warehouses, and everything pretty much outsourced, even for your calls to credit card companies.

4 Hour Workweek Book Review

NetKlix PPC Review

Well, I was reading Gyutae’s WinningTheWeb blog post on NetKlix and figured I’d give it a go.

Basically NetKlix is like Google Adsense except you get to choose multiple “channels” for targetted advertising.

Right now, I am getting a lot of Beach Bum ads on Zedomax.com, where I am testing NetKlix. We will have to wait and see if that goes away as I didn’t select any “business” categories.

I will update you on some results though by tomorrow or Friday.

My New Business Cards Arrived!

Yey, I finally got my lazy a*s to make some new business cards, my old ones were getting real old and too black.

I hope you like the “search” bar I used, probably one single important factor in Guerilla Internet Marketing.

One thing I realized about life is that sometimes you have to put yourself in the position you want, don’t wait for someone else to give you a raise, promotion, whatever. (You will probably wait too long and too old to enjoy it.)

I’ve been always hired at companies as product manager, director, and president but my real goal was to become CEO, simply to be at the top.

No more climbing up corporate ladders, this is my middle finger to those men who were above me all my life, telling me what to do when I should have been telling them how to do things.

(The “d” in Zedomax is the middle finger. )

Which reminds me of countless times I asked my former bosses to promote me as President. They were all too happy to give me a middle finger and stick me in a cubicle with a lesser title. Promptly, I usually couldn’t stay at a company more than couple months and I always fired myself, never the other way around.

My dad tells me my logo is too childish, my readers tell me my logo looks like a bunch of scribbles, and I tell myself that this is going to be the logo because I am the CEO of this company and screw them.
