First of all, I have been reading a cool book called Click by Bill Taser, a book about how the general population of the internet search online.   I will do a book review soon but in the meanwhile, let me show you how to analyze and pick the right “time” to promote your blog.  (I am mentioning the book since I did get some insights on from the book)

One of the best and free ways to analyze search data is Google Trends.

Above screenshot shows a graph of search term “wedding” and “rings”.  As you can see, there’s spikes in the “wedding” search term, predominantly rising near January and steadily decreasing throughout the year after about July or August.  Trend is slightly different for rings but you can clearly see there’s a small spike, always appearing at the beginning of the year.

As a blog marketer, you can take advantage of this data and figure out when to promote your blog aggressively.

Let’s say you have a wedding blog, you need to really get all your best blog posts out near the beginning of the year, or at least try your hardest during that time.

Even if you don’t have a wedding blog, you can always do “featured” wedding-related articles on your blog if your blog topic is even slightly related and take advantage of the whopping traffic masses who search for wedding related articles.

Well, that’s just one example but I am sure you can find a way to “predict” when certain keywords are going to be taking off and adjust your blog content accordingly to that seasonal “spike” effect.

As another example, I feature lots of Halloween-related articles on all of my blogs as of lately as I know there’s going to be a “spike” nearing this Halloween.

Here’s Halloween on Google Trends:

As you can see, Halloween has been about the same for the last four years, you know that you even if you can get 0.1% of that Halloween traffic during Halloween, that’s a lot of web traffic for your blog.

Statistics will remain the same for such traditional topics as Halloween but you can go beyond this on new events such as death of a celebrity or even Obama’s campaign versus McCain’s.

Speaking of Obama and McCain, let’s see the pattern of voters who search online:

As I have reviewed Obama and McCain’s website traffic stats before, Google Trends shows the same thing, more people tend to search for Obama than McCain.  That doesn’t mean though, that Obama is more popular, it could also mean that McCain supporters are searching Obama to find out his/her past mistakes. (as an example)

Google Trends is a great tool for online marketers to find out “how” search terms have performed in the past.  By analyzing the data and incorporating into your overall blog marketing strategy, you could gain a 10x number of web traffic from using a term over another.

Well, that’s all for today folks, I am tired and blog marketers work too hard. :)
